Vitamin B12 is essential for making red blood cells, maintaining nerves and producing energy. Yet studies suggest up to half of Indians may be deficient — largely because B12 comes mainly from animal foods.
Who Is at Risk?
- Vegetarians and vegans — plant foods contain almost no B12
- People over 50 — stomach acid needed for absorption declines with age
- Diabetics on metformin — the medicine reduces B12 absorption over time
- People taking acidity medicines (PPIs) long-term
- Anyone with gut issues like IBS or coeliac disease
Symptoms Develop Slowly
B12 deficiency creeps up over months to years:
- Fatigue and weakness that doesn't improve with rest
- Tingling or numbness in hands and feet ("pins and needles")
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Mouth ulcers and a sore, red tongue
- Memory problems and difficulty concentrating
- Low mood or irritability
- Breathlessness on mild exertion
The nerve symptoms are the most important — left untreated, nerve damage can become permanent.
Testing and Treatment
A simple Vitamin B12 blood test (no fasting needed) tells you where you stand. Levels below 200 pg/mL indicate deficiency; 200–300 pg/mL is borderline.
Treatment is straightforward — oral supplements or injections for severe cases — and most symptoms reverse within weeks to months if caught early.
The Smart Approach
Because B12 and Vitamin D deficiencies often coexist and share symptoms, testing them together makes sense. Yourlab's Vitamin Profile (₹1400) covers both, and our Advanced Full Body Checkup includes them along with iron studies.
