It's the least glamorous test in the lab — and one of the most informative. The Urine Routine & Microscopy examines your urine physically, chemically and under a microscope, screening kidneys, bladder and metabolic health in one go.
What the Test Looks At
Physical Examination
Colour, clarity and concentration. Cloudy urine hints at infection; consistently dilute or dark urine tells its own stories about hydration and kidney concentrating ability.
Chemical Analysis
- Protein — healthy kidneys keep protein in the blood. Protein leaking into urine is an early red flag for kidney damage, especially in diabetics and hypertensives.
- Glucose — sugar appears in urine when blood sugar crosses roughly 180 mg/dL; a screening clue for uncontrolled diabetes
- Ketones — produced when the body burns fat for fuel; important in diabetes emergencies
- Blood — invisible (microscopic) blood can indicate stones, infection or other urinary tract issues
- Nitrites & Leukocyte Esterase — chemical fingerprints of bacterial infection
Microscopy
A trained eye examines the sediment:
- Pus cells — elevated counts confirm urinary tract infection
- RBCs — support findings of blood
- Crystals — may hint at kidney stone tendency
- Casts — tube-shaped particles that reveal kidney-level problems
Who Benefits Most
- Women with burning urination or frequency — UTIs are extremely common and easily confirmed
- Diabetics — yearly urine protein screening catches kidney complications early
- Anyone with unexplained fever — hidden UTIs are a classic missed cause
- People with swelling or foamy urine
