How to Read Your Lab Report Like a Pro: A Patient's Guide

Understanding the Layout

Every result line typically has four parts:

• Test name — e.g., Haemoglobin, TSH, SGPT
• Your value — the measured result
• Units — g/dL, mg/dL, etc. (units differ between tests; never compare across units)
• Reference range — the interval considered typical for a healthy population

What 'H' and 'L' Flags Really Mean

Values outside the range get flagged High or Low. Important truths about these flags:

• A mild deviation is often meaningless. Ranges cover 95% of healthy people — 1 in 20 healthy results falls outside purely by statistics.
• Context is everything. Exercise before the test, dehydration, a recent meal, even the time of day shift several values.
• Trends beat snapshots. One borderline reading matters far less than the direction across two or three tests over time.

When to Take a Flag Seriously

• The value is far outside the range, not marginally
• Multiple related tests point the same way (e.g., high sugar AND high HbA1c)
• The abnormality matches your symptoms
• It persists on repeat testing

The Golden Rules

• Don't self-diagnose from Google — the same abnormality has many causes
• Don't self-medicate — especially not thyroid, iron or vitamin doses
• Do show every report to your doctor — even 'normal' ones; they complete the picture
• Do keep old reports — your personal baseline is diagnostic gold
