When people hear "liver disease", they think alcohol. But India's biggest liver problem today is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) — fat accumulation in the liver driven by diet, weight and insulin resistance. Studies estimate it affects 1 in 3 urban Indians, including many who are only mildly overweight.
Why It's Dangerous
Fatty liver is silent for years. A minority of cases progress quietly from simple fat deposits to inflammation (NASH), then scarring (fibrosis), and eventually cirrhosis — at which point damage is irreversible. Fatty liver is also tightly linked with diabetes and heart disease.
Who Should Worry?
- Anyone overweight, especially with belly fat
- Diabetics and pre-diabetics — up to 70% have fatty liver
- People with high triglycerides or low HDL
- Those with sedentary jobs and frequent fried/processed food
- Even lean individuals with strong family history — "lean NAFLD" is common in South Asians
The LFT: Your Liver's Report Card
The Liver Function Test measures:
- SGPT (ALT) & SGOT (AST) — enzymes that leak into blood when liver cells are stressed; often the first abnormality in fatty liver
- Alkaline Phosphatase & GGT — bile duct markers
- Bilirubin — the pigment behind jaundice
- Albumin & Total Protein — the liver's manufacturing output
Elevated SGPT with risk factors is often the earliest clue that prompts an ultrasound and lifestyle intervention.
The Reversal Window
Here's the hopeful part: early fatty liver is fully reversible. A 7–10% weight reduction, cutting sugar and refined carbs, and regular walking can normalise the liver in months.
Check your liver annually — Yourlab's Liver + Kidney Combo (₹900) or any full body package includes a complete LFT, collected from your home.
